In a press release dated 14 March, 2007, Stefan Pokroppa announced his resignation from CLARO.
Three days later, Stefan was travelling on a special bus to Orihuela as an invitee of the Partido Popular to attend the celebration of the "proclamation" of Monica Lorente as future Mayor of Orihuela.
Stefan said he was quitting CLARO because it was in a mess. This was patently not the reason. In a press interview he said the party was divided and had missed an opportunity to work alongside the Partido Popular. The "opportunity" took the form of an offer put to CLARO by the Partido Popular leader Monica Lorente to include a member of CLARO in their candidate list and to offer two CLARO members paid employment in a future Popular Party administration. The condition attached to this offer was that CLARO would be suspended and would not contest the May municipal election - in other words CLARO was invited to commit suicide.
There was no division in the CLARO Committee in rejecting this offer. We would never agree to abandon CLARO's mission to organise and campaign for independent representation in Orihuela Town Hall. No division except for one person, Stefan Pokroppa who now says this was a missed opportunity. And to show his true colours it was announced that Stefan Pokroppa will be included in the election campaign committee of the Partido Popular!
Stefan Pokroppa did not resign from CLARO - he defected. There was no honest policy difference between him and the other members of the CLARO committee. He quit for personal interests. He broadcast his departure widely with fabricated reasons. He announced it to the press and other media. In other words, he chose to leave in a way which would do maximum damage to a party which he helped to create only a few months earlier.
The reasons for founding CLARO, which we all agreed, were to put an end to the neglect and abandonment by those in power in Orihuela Town Hall and who has been in power for the last. 20 years in which the damage had been done, not only in Orihuela Costa but in many other areas of Orihuela municipality, especially the pedanias (villages surrounding Orihuela). The Partido Popular, the party to which Stefan Pokroppa has now defected, the party CLARO was created to oppose.
CLARO wants to present a real, independent democratic choice to the residents of Orihuela Costa, pedanias and Orihuela itself. A choice which we are sure the people of Orihuela, Spanish and non-Spanish EU citizens alike, are going to favour with their votes on 27 May.
