Torrevieja’s own patronal fiesta, in honour of the “Inmaculada”, locally known as “La Purisima”, is celebrated each year on 8th December.
Whilst, of course, the fiesta is a religious celebration with various events taking place in and around the principal church of “La Inmaculada”, a vast number of other activities will, once again, be taking place. As usual, a huge marquee will be set up within the harbour area alongside the fairground where, each evening, a traditional “verbena” (or dance) is held. Each night’s “verbena” is dedicated to a distinct group of the torrevejense public including a dance for the ‘retired’ (3ªedad), an event for the youth of the town and even entertainment for the very youngest! This year, and for the first time, the fiestas department of the Ayuntamiento, in conjunction with the international residents office will offer a speacial “INTERNATIONAL GALA” with the aim of offering a simple means of integration and a manner in which the international community can actively participate in and enjoy our very own PATRONAL FIESTA – “LA PURISIMA”.
From 20.30h on WEDNESDAY 1st DECEMBER 2010, and COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE, local residents of whatever nationality are invited to come along to the fiestas marquee and join in the fun!! Live bands, quality entertainment and a public bar will be on offer in order to celebrate our very own fiesta in style!!
Distinct music styles are on offer, from the emotive and powerful singing voice of Maria O’Hara and the “sounds of the 60’s” and the “Everly Brothers”, to the varied, popular repertoire of the Spanish-British five piece band “Route 69”.
All you need to do is to turn op on the night with a desire to enjoy yourselves, listen to the music and, if you feel like it, get up and dance the night away to these top entertainers!!!
MARIA O’HARA:
Being the youngest of a musical family of nine brothers and sisters, it was inevitable that Maria took up her singing career whilst she was still a small child!. Whilst she is classically trained and qualified in singing, she very much enjoys all genres of music, a passion which is transmitted to her enthusiastic audiences. Her objective for this special gala night is, she says, “To deliver the roller-coaster of emotions which only great music can create
EVERLY BROTHERS:
Rick & Dan play the music of Phil & Don, The Everly Brothers in their ''Heartbreak & Harmonies'' show.
From their very first hit in 1957 to the present day, the Everly Brothers remain the world’s most loved and successful vocal duo. The sweet sound of their close harmonies has influenced legendary groups such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys over the years.
Bye Bye Love, Dream, Cathy’s Clown, Let It Be Me are just a few Everly''s classics that you will hear included in this outstanding tribute show. Taking you all the way through to "On The Wings Of A Nightingale, the 80''s hit written by Sir Paul McCartney, Rick & Dan will take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Add this to some other classic sing-a-long hits by other artists from the same era such as Buddy Holly & Cliff Richard, Rick & Dan provide entertainment to get their audiences dancing in the aisles!
Minimal backing tracks are used so you can really hear the replicated harmonies and acoustic guitar playing of the two guys on stage. As two extremely competent and experienced musicians, this show could even be performed "unplugged” in the most intimate of venues.
Rick and Dan have chosen not to go down the "look-a-like" tribute show that sometimes distracts the audience and have opted to concentrate on re-creating the original sound of the Everly Brother’s as faithfully as possible, so close your eyes and drift away on a trip back to the fifties you won’t forget.
ROUTE 69:
Route 69 is a 5-piece classic/glam rock band unlike any other here on the Costa Blanca.
It was originally formed in 2004, when Eduardo , an already experienced singer in a variety of local Spanish rock outfits, decided to take the reigns and form his own band.
Wanting only the best musicians to be involved in his new project, he contacted Manuel, an old school friend guitarist who was classically trained from the age of 8 at the Elche Music Conservatory. News spread and they were soon joined by Pedro, the lead singer in another band and a phenomenal drummer.
Chus , a long time friend of Eduardo´s, is the band’s capable and “groovy” bass player.
The band started playing rock covers and soon became well known on the Spanish circuit continuing to grow in popularity. It was in 2008, that Edu asked Paul to join their all Spanish outfit as a keyboard player and to help the band develop in a new direction.
Paul is a multiinstrumentalist from London who has played professionally in the U.K. and Europe in a variety of bands, such as The Southside Soul Sensation, The Blues Brothers Show, and The Flying Fortress Jump Jive Outfit.
Route 69 now have ‘resident bookings’ at “The Abbey Tavern” (Orihuela Costa), “On Stage” (Gran Alacant) and Quinta Lacey (Elda), and appear at a variety of Spanish ‘fiestas’, weddings and corporate events.
They have also appeared several times on Spanish TV. and radio.
Why are they so popular?
Maybe it’s the dressing up and “Glam-Rock” feather boas? Or perhaps it’s that they are so individual in their repertoire, performing a combination of both English classics, such as “River deep, mountain high” and “Shake a tail feather”, and also Spanish classics, such as “Todo Negro” and “Flamenco”, which delights Spanish audiences and adds something a bit different for more ‘international’ crowds.
Together, these five incredibly talented musicians create one amazingly full sound, which never fails to have their audience (of whatever nationality) on their feet and grooving the night away. The extremely high standard of their musicianship is evident, and Edu as the lead singer and front man commands his stage with assurance.
It is obvious that these guys love what they do, and so do their audiences.
DON’T MISS THE “INTERNATIONAL GALA OF THE PATRONAL FIESTAS – TORREVIEJA 2010”.
WEDNESDAY 1st DECEMBER, from 20.30h in the municipal marquee. AND IT’S FREE!!!!!
