ANOTHER NATURAL PARK THREATENED

As if there weren’t enough houses on the coast of Cartagena, one of the last remaining natural areas, is now under threat of urbanisation. Between La Manga and Cartagena sit Calblanque and just outside Cabo de Palos, Cala Reona. Both are areas of oustanding beauty, and protected sanctuaries. However, 60 hectares of these parklands are being recategorised to permit the construction of between 500 and 1,000 homes there.
Nature lovers, ecologists and organisations are understandably horrified at the suggestion, but the Town Hall has already started the procedure to recategorise the land, and the plan has already passed the first hurdle. The PP municipal government of Cartagena appears to not care about the effect this would have on the area. It is one of the last strongholds of native species of herbs, shrubs and trees in Murcia.
The councillor for urban planning in Cartagena Town Hall commented that the proposed plan would be of low density housing and would not affect the natural parklands there. A group has been set up on Facebook entitled 'Salvemos Calarreona'. Anyone who wishes to stop protest at this idea can sign the petition there.
