DON'T SWIM ALONE - NO MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE

Murcia's beaches have been the location of 11 deaths so far this year, a much higher number than usual.
Two elderly tourists died in the tranquil waters of the Mar Menor last week, an 80 year old near the salt lakes and a 60 year old at Lo Pagan. The high age of the bathers is being blamed for the statistics, and the fact that many go into the water alone. Of the eleven who died, only three actually drowned, the others had heart attacks whilst in the sea, and a 34 year old had an epileptic attack.
The majority of the victims were over 60. If they had had a heart attack outside the water they most probably wouldn´t have died, commented Doctor Juarez, one of the emergency doctors who was on the scene of various of the accidents. If they had been accompanied in the water this would not have happened.
He cannot reiterate enough how important it is not to go into the water alone, and this goes for people of all ages. “Anyone can faint from heat stroke, and if you are on your own in the sea you may not be discovered until it is too late,” he warns.
