Numerous passersby stopped in front of the main facade of the San Martin Obispo Church in Callosa last week, to watch restoration work carried out on the bell tower, which was literally falling off in bits. A protective net has been placed on the tower to avoid any further falls of stones and rubble.
The first time that part of the tower fell off was during the Corpus Christi procession on June 6th. It was a special occasion as it was the first time that the statue of San Roque que Roma was paraded through the streets of Callosa. Fortunately the rubble didn’t hit anyone, and just left a metre wide hole in the roof of the church. Since then part of the Plaza de Espaňa and the adjoining road have been closed to the public in case any more falls occur.
It appears that the tower is crumbling due to small crack which water started running through and which gradually became bigger.
