Despite the initial resistance, most of the owners of illegal homes in Catral’s green area, which consist of some 1,300 houses, have handed over a payment, under the concept of urban activity, which will allow them to gradually legalise their homes, which were built over past years without any municipal authorisation.
The amount which has been paid is an average of 1,200 euros per house, and this will enable the Town Hall to draw up the necessary paperwork which will then be sent on to the Generalitat Valenciana and added to the General Plan of Urban Development, who will have to change the land use from rural to urban. The Mayor of Catral, Aurelio Albero prefers not to call the process legalisation. He says that the houses were built with no general plan, so the task of now installing a drainage system is very difficult. The town hall are employing two technicians who will have to carry out a detailed study of each home to obtain the necessary information to install the necessary services.
t appears that septic tanks may be an option, but the waste disposal problem needs to be addressed, as a lot of the sewage from houses owned by Brits is seeping onto agricultural land.
