VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE “C” Division
Ivie Davies / 2010-03-21 10:55:39
El Valle Golf Resort – 19th March 2009 ...It was a bright sun tipped morning and 20 degrees at El Valle Golf Resort, Yes! That’s what we had sun and warmth for the ‘C’ Division matches, somewhat different to four weeks prior at La Finca.
It did threaten rain but not enough to worry about and I doubt if it would have dampened the spirits of Rocajuna and Wolfpack teams as they both wanted to strengthen their respective positions at the top of the table.
The opponents TOFFS and Los Caballeros were going to have some say in the matter on the El Valle course that could embarrass even the best golfer.
Wolfpack Golf Society, Captain, Geoff Hollingsworth had his team on the tee good and ready to show the opposition they meant to win the “C” Division, and it was a solid team effort as Jon Tomlinson, Alan Hill, Bill Humes, Geoff Hollingsworth, Ray Clayton and Gerry Buckley all weighed in with 30+ points, the best score of the day was Jon Tomlinson 34 points, which helped take Wolfpack’s total points to the highest of the day.
It was credit to TOFFS who endeavoured to match the League leaders and only just fell short in two of the games by narrow margins, Dennis Choi, Terry Sharley and Stan Low scored 33, 35 and 32 respectively and in defeat scored the second highest total score of the day 228, and this against other opposition would have won the match.
Rocajuna team showed the same sort of mettle as their rivals with solid performances from Denis McCormack 31, Steve Rush 30, Terry Lewis 30, and Kevin Fitzpatrick 31. This gave them a 4 to Nil victory but Los Caballeros were not a match at El Valle only scoring a lowly 172 points.
The results of the matches:
Wolfpack G S 4 (245 pts) vs. TOFFS G S 0 (228 pts)
Rocajuna G S 4 (223 pts) vs. Los Caballeros G S 0 (172 pts)
The 3 bonus points went to Rocajuna G S and Wolfpack G S.
P W D L Bon Pts
Wolfpack G.S. 16 14 0 2 12 54
Rocajuna G.S. 16 12 0 4 12 48
Los Caballeros G.S. 16 5 0 11 6 21
Lunes G.S. 12 5 0 7 3 18
Toffs G.S. 16 4 0 12 0 12
Torre G.S. 12 4 0 8 0 12
The Torre G S versus Lunes G S has had to be re-arranged but any result from this will not have any effect on the two teams at the top as they are up there on their own.
The champions will be from either Rocajuna or Wolfpack as these two sides play each other in the re-arranged matches at La Finca on May 7th. It will be a battle of the Titans it’s not just a promotion issue it’s a matter of pride to be called “Champions” To these teams, and to quote the late Bill Shankly, “It’s not a matter of life or death – It’s more important than that!”
There is just six points between them and although it’s a cliché, there’s everything to play for.
The Fat Lady is in the wings waiting to sing, every year and in each Division, the League throws up the tightest finishes and the climax in the “C” Division is no exception. It proves, if proof was needed, that the Vega Baja Premier Golf League is the most competitive golf League and the combined Stableford system is the best Team scoring method.
In April sees the first competition for the League to find the Champion of Champions at El Plantio.
