The Euro Golf Society from La Marquesa Golf this week handed over a cheque for a generous 1557€ to Paul Cunningham Nurses to enable the charity to continue the important role they play in the local community offering end of life care to the terminally ill.
The money was raised by the 140 strong society members during the last golf season from June 2011 to June 2012 during which time Bill Martin was Captain. The role entailed him choosing the charity for the year and as his wife Sue was diagnosed with a terminal illness he felt Paul Cunningham Nurses would be a worthy cause. Still happily fighting fight Sue also felt it was important to support such a valuable charity, a charity that she says she may need the help of in the future.
Accompanied by Treasurer John Fairhurst, the pair donated the money raised to PCN nurses Susie and Sarah on the 6th hole of La Marquesa Golf course, the very hole where some of the money was raised. “We had a 'Captain's Bunker' which was on hole 6,” explains Bill. “It's quite a common bunker so every time a ball goes in the golfer had to pay 1€.” The remainder of the money, over 1000€, was raised at the annual brunch and auction with local businesses also donating items.
'Happy, friendly, respect.' That is the belief of the society which has been established for over 23 years and welcomes all players from all walks of life, from ex-colonels to teenage girls, and Paul Cunningham Nurses have full respect and thanks to every one of the society members who have raised these vital funds for the charity.
