NEW MIRADOR BOXING CLUB OPENS ITS DOORS
By Kevin Reardon / 2009-05-10 15:29:13
Would you believe that someone in the region has finally had the foresight to open an amateur boxing club for youngsters, a facility that many of us have been saying is long overdue. At long last, and after all the years that I have been writing locally about the sport, I am delighted to report that the new club will finally open its doors next Friday night, so after all this time, what the resources of the Ayuntamiento’s of both San Miguel and the Orihuela Costa have been unable to achieve will be righted when the new club situated in the basement of the Mirador Restaurant in Eagles Nest throws open its doors for its very first Open Night, an evening where the club staff will be on hand to show off their new facility to anyone at all who might want to go along.
Senior coach and partner (Sam) Lloyd Sambor will be assisted by local enthusiast Dennis Nobbs. For the two of them Friday will be the culmination of many months of hard work. “We have been desperately seeking a suitable venue” Dennis told the Leader. “and we have had a difficult few months. But now with the help and support of Frank and Marlene Oliver, the new proprietors of the Mirador Bar and Restaurant, we have finally found a facility that will allow us to get the club off the ground. Like Sam and myself they are both keen to provide an opportunity to young people on the Costa Blanca who might want to develop their discipline, character and fitness through boxing training”.
Head coach Sam is a fully qualified ABA coach with many years of experience both competing and training at all levels of the game. He said "Amateur boxing is one of the most rewarding, challenging and safest sports available to young people today. "It isn't about knocking people out, it's about outscoring them. We show people how to develop a sense of intuition, quick thinking, a relaxed state and self-motivation.
When I asked Sam who he was hoping to attract to the club he emphasised that it was open to anyone at all of either sex, of any age and of any standard, whether they be individuals who simply want to get fit, or whether they want to learn the techniques that are associated with the sport. He said "Our aims are simply to provide the opportunity, to give youngsters something to to, something to aim for, to help build up their self confidence, their discipline and their character..
The club itself is already equipped with gloves, head gear, punch bags and much of the equipment necessary to put the youngsters through their paces but Sam told me it would always welcome more. As such he is looking toward any local business or group which might like to assist with sponsorship or the purchase of additional equipment.
Of course the eventual aim would be to build a successful club which would compete against similar clubs throughout Spain and the rest of Europe but at this stage it is just about establishing the venue on the local sporting scene.
Starting on 18 May training will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6-9pm. Of course there will be a small charge which will be put into club funds to meet necessary expenses but parents are assured that it will kept to an absolute minimum.
So if you are interested to see what Sam and Dennis have so far achieved and what they are hoping to accomplish in the future why not go along to the new Mirador Boxing Club in Eagles Nest on Friday evening from 8pm where all the staff will be on hand to discuss the club and its ambitions with any interested recruit, parent, potential coach or sponsor.
