The King’s Cup, Copa del Rey, is on its way to Torrevieja but not as you might know it because although Barcelona and Atletico Madrid may go head to head, we are talking handball and not football in this instance. But before you write off the thought of going to a handball game, in terms of a local event, there is no other sport in Torrevieja with an atmosphere quite like what you’ll find at a handball game; it’s positively electric.
Torrevieja will host the XXXVII Handball King’s Cup and the VI Minicopa ASOBAL to be played from 7 to 11 March 2012 in the Sports Palace "Infanta Cristina". This major sporting event will boost tourism in the city along with adding awareness of the brand image of the Costa Blanca and Torrevieja, as the best teams in the ASOBAL league, ranked as the best league in the World, come to the city of salt, with the matches broadcast on channel TVE Teledeporte and televised to countries on five continents.
Torrevieja just missed out on qualifying for the tournament but the teams participating include Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Cuatro Rayas Valladolid, Reale Ademar Leon, Aragon, La Rioja, and BM Octavio. The Minicopa ASOBAL takes place from 9 to March 11 and features the qualifying cadet teams of the eight teams contesting the King’s Cup.
It’s been a decade, the 2001-2002 season, since the Costa Blanca hosted the tournament, when the Copa del Rey XXVII was played in Alicante. On that occasion the Cup was won Reale Ademar Leon, who beat Ciudad Real (31-28). News on pricing and schedules are still to be announced.
