In a move that his look alike would have been proud of, a couple of weeks ago Andy McBride, who is perhaps better known as the Rod Stewart Tribute Act, brought a gang of local thieves to justice, and put a stop to their terrorizing elderly local residents.
Andy was on his way home after doing a gig on Monday evening, when he saw an altercation in Calle de Rocio, just off La Zenia roundabout. He saw two men, a Spaniard and an Irish man, struggling to keep a grip on a chap on North African origin. Andy stopped and they shouted to him, “Get the police, get the police!” He dialed 112, and was informed the police were already on the way. It appears that a gang of four men had just robbed an elderly Irish lady who was very shaken up. Her husband and the passing Spaniard had managed to grab one of the thieves, and were trying to keep a hold of him. The gang had threatened the Irish lady with a knife and snatched her handbag. A few metres away they spotted the handbag, but the purse was gone.
Just as the police arrived another car pulled up with the other members of the gang. The detainee struggled to get away, and that is when Andy, an ex-boxer, gave him a knock-out punch, putting an end to any ideas he might have had of escaping. Seconds later the Guardia Civil also arrived, and the whole gang were detained. The police found five other handbags in the boot of their car, which also happened to be stolen.
They were in court last Wednesday.
