The illegal immigrant who lost an arm in a horrific accident at a Valencia bakery this May has been discharged from hospital, and was collected from the Virgen del Consuelo Hospital on Monday by the Bolivian consul in Valencia, Mario Touchard.
33 year old Franns Rilles Melgar had been under medical care since the accident at the bakery in Real de Gandia on 28th May, and is now looking forward to being reunited with his mother, who he has not seen for more than two years. She’s making the trip over from Bolivia to look after her son.
The government decided this Friday to grant residence papers to the injured man, and his sister, Silvia, has made a plea to the authorities for his family to also receive their papers to allow them to remain in Spain. ‘It is we who will be looking after him’, she said, ‘he needs us’.
An Employment Inspector’s report on the factory where the accident happened notes ‘serious safety and hygiene deficiencies’, in addition to the fact that the victim was working there without being registered with Social Security. According to information from the CCOO union, Frans Rilles was asked by his bosses not to say anything about his work situation when they dropped him off 200 metres away from the local hospital. The arm he lost was found to be too badly damaged to be reattached after one of the bosses threw it out with the rubbish.
The two brothers who own the factory – closed since the day after the accident – have been called to appear as suspects before the investigating court. It’s understood that no date has been set for that as yet.
