Ryanair is now responsible for 20% of all the passenger traffic at the El Altet airport in Alicante. Last week the airline opened new routes to Norway, Poland, Slovakia and Ireland and from the first week in July they will also link Alicante to Bologna, Fez, Marrakech, Santander, Lille, Gdansk and Haugesund.
From next month the Irish airline will be operating a total 45 different routes from the airport with the expectation of carrying out two million passenger movements a year. They currently have six planes based in Alicante.
There are however some concerns voiced by local tourism chiefs who think it is not recommendable to depend so much on a single company. Over the first four months of the year the El Altet airport has been used by 2,321,808 passengers, a number which is 15% down on the same period last year.
Meanwhile the información newspaper reports that tourists flats are 20% cheaper than last year in Benidorm in an effort to keep the British market, hit not only by the economic crisis, but also by the fall in the value of sterling. A new promotional campaign for the tourist accommodation was launched in the town yesterday.
