A man drowned and two people needed medical treatment in separate incidents on La Mata and Acequií³n beaches in Torrevieja last Tuesday.
A 73-year-old man drowned at La Mata after apparently suffering a heart attack. The incident happened just before 11am. The man, believed to be a foreign national, was seen floating face down in the water. A 26-year-old man went into the sea to help him and also got into trouble. A SAMU ambulance crew attempted to resuscitate the victim but it was too late. The currents were very strong that day and the red warning flag was flying. The dead man's body was taken to Torrevieja Tanatorio.
On Playa Acequií³n on the same day, a 30-year-old man had to be rescued by the Red Cross after he got caught in the strong currents and was unable to get out of the sea. He needed treatment from the Red Cross before recovering.
Tuesday's weather conditions were very windy, resulting in strong currents. Readers are reminded not to enter the water if the red warning flag is flying.
