The AP-1 is the first toll road in Spain to have the toll booths permanently removed meaning that road users no longer need to pay the fee (peage) for using the stretch of motorway.

Later this year, the AP-7 between Malaga and Guadiaro and the AP-4 running from Sevilla to Cadiz will also see their toll booths removed.

In 2021 more contracts for the toll roads will be fullfilled and will expire resulting in many more free motorways in Spain. These includ the section of the the AP-7 between Zaragoza and Alicante, the AP-2, between Tarragona and La Jonquera, and AP-7 between Montmelo and Papiol.
