After meeting up in Cañadas de Gallego the convoy of cars made its way to the coast, 2 km from Percheles beach. Twenty-six walkers walked up to the café/radar station/lookout point for a view over Percheles playa. It was a magnificent day.

The party split into 2 groups, one going up the main path and the other crossed the nudist beach (only 2 bodies) and along the mountainous coastal path. The views continued to be breath taking and no one slipped off the cliff into the Med.

The walkers joined up and followed the track to the aforementioned date smuggler’s compound where Jon filled in the details of the history of the buildings.

The walk then started to meander back to the cars where, unfortunately, two of the older models had had their quarter-light windows smashed and a handbag and rucksack were missing.

On that sombre note, the party went to Los Cazadores restaurante for more disappointment. The meal was a letdown.

Darwinian Gardeners

On March 2nd a group of gardeners visited the Hermanos Morena nursery near Torre Pacheco. We were cordially welcomed by Luis and his assistant with soft drinks and beer, and then given half an hour to wander around the first greenhouse collecting the plants we wanted to buy. Luis led us around the nursery and into the other greenhouses where we collected more drought resistant plants for our gardens.

Later, we enjoyed some nibbles and more to drink while we waited for the arrival of a cherry tree which was used for a demonstration of pruning. Some of us had questions regarding the poor performance of our own fruit trees. The general answer was “lots of fertiliser, and iron if the leaves look yellow”.

Our next visit on April 13th will be to the Finca Torrecillas in Corvera, which is an eco retreat. We will be given a guided tour of the 500 year old estate and the family home which is now a museum.
