The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the Royal British Legion recently enjoyed a day trip to Agost.

Known as the Pottery Village, Ceramics have been made here for the last two centuries.

However our visit was not to one of the still operational potteries, but to the Museo de Cantereria.

Gran Alacant go Potty in Agost
Gran Alacant go Potty in Agost

A museum housed in a former ceramic factory, which has been adapted to the needs of 21st century tourism.

On our guided tour, we were able to see firsthand an extensive collection of objects for daily use, from the earliest to the present-day. We learned of the process of making the pottery, and lived the experience of entering an “Arab Kiln”. We saw the potters wheels of various heights and sizes. And the enormous outside basins which were used for the decantation of the clay.

Our thanks go to the Museum guide Jesus, for an excellent informative presentation which to the eternal gratitude of our members, was in English.

After the tour, we moved on to a local restaurant, where we were royally wined and dined.

The Gran Alacant branch of the Royal British Legion meets on the first Monday of the month, 6pm at in Lounge D, Plaza Mayor, Gran Alacant. For more information please contact granalacant.secretary@rbl.community
