One person was killed and another five injured in a traffic accident that occurred on the N332 close to Santa Pola on Sunday afternoon.

The accident, involving two cars, took place at Km 82 between Santa POla and La Marina at about 1.15pm.

Police, ambulances and a helicopter were deployed to the scene of the incident to deal with the victims. It is understood that firefighters had to use acetylene equipment to effect the release of four people who were trapped inside the vehicles.

Of the six people in the vehicles one of them, a woman, died at the scene, while the remaining five people, were transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante, the General Hospital of Elche and the Hospital of the Vinalopó. According to sources from the Traffic Civil Guard, who are now investigating the cause of the accident, two of the injured were airlifted by a medical helicopter to the General Hospital of Alicante.

The accident closed the 332 national highway for several hours, causing tailbacks for several kilometres at a very busy point on the coast.

This section of road in the vicinity of Santa Pola has become a black spot due to the numerous fatal accidents recorded, including a motorist who died at the beginning of the year, another in which a woman lost her life after hitting a school bus and one that occurred just over a month ago in which four vehicles were involved.
