Each year in January The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator reveals the total of monies raised for the Poppy Appeal in the previous year. Last month was no exception and Robin Hargrave, who Co-ordinates the distribution of all the poppies in our area, was on hand to give the good news.

The amount raised in 2017 was a tremendous 169,622.40€. This was an increase of almost 3% on the previous year. Robin explained that not only was this money raised by our hard working Branches, but also smaller Church groups, supermarkets (near Barcelona), those flying in and out of our airports and individuals of all nationalities who supported the Charity. He paid tribute to them and thanked everyone for the continuing support for those in the Armed Forces community when in need.

On the Orihuela Costa the branch raised an amazing 45,000, equating to 383.88 euro per branch member, and 27% of the District total, which apparently now also puts the branch in line for the Noel Rogers Trophy which is  awarded  to  the  Overseas  Branch  raising  the  greatest  sum  per member worldwide.

The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces Community and we are often asked – How is the money spent in Spain?

The answer is, there are a great variety ways, but the following are just a few examples

  • Stair lifts
  • Mechanical wheelchairs and scooters
  • Refurbishing homes so beneficiaries have a better standard of life, ie changes to a bathroom or bedroom
  • Wood, oil and solar panels have been purchased for isolated properties
  • Spectacles and dentures.

So we would like to thank everyone who continue to support a Charity which is almost 100 years of age.

You don’t need an Armed Forces background to attend a Branch event. It is a great opportunity to make new friends.
