On Sunday October 1st, Mojácar joined together with all the 57 municipalities throughout the country that belong to the Association of The Most Beautiful Towns and Villages in Spain, in order to celebrate their own special annual day.  The official flag of the ‘Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España’ was raised by Rosmari Cano, Mojácar’s Mayor, accompanied by Tourism Councillor, Emmanuel Agüero and Lucas Mayo, Councillor for Foreigners.

Emmanuel Aguero then made a short speech, stressing the importance of the Association’s work as a means of preserving the heritage, cultures and customs of numerous localities around Spain. He appealed to the Public Administrations to increase their support to the smaller municipalities so that they do not disappear through population decline. He also welcomed the Italian towns who are celebrating the day for the first time, as part of their International Network.  Lastly, he expressed support for the Mayors and Councillors in Catalonia, who were being persecuted and insulted by defending both the law and democracy.

Afterwards, to continue the celebration, Mojácar Council offered free visits to all the tourists and local people present to the town’s newly opened Casa-Museo, a village house converted into a small museum, uniquely filled with furniture and artefacts showing many old customs and traditions.

The Association ‘Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España’ was created in 2011 with the aim of valuing the heritage and culture of the different municipalities that are dotted across Spain, playing a particularly important role to the smallest and rural places.
