Looney tunes accommodation for Barcelona’s National Police Reinforcements

The Moby Dada.

I appreciate that the situation in Catalonia regarding their forthcoming independence vote next Sunday is an extremely important and serious matter but I had to smile when I read the story of the deployment of 5000 additional police officers that have been sent to Barcelona to deal with rising tensions.

The fact that accommodation for such a large number of police officers was not readily available saw the authorities make the eminently sensible decision of chartering two large ferries for the officers who are to be stationed there: the Rhapsody and the Moby Dada.

However the latter vessel has caught the attention of many, however. As can be seen in the photograph, the ship is decorated with much-loved Looney Tunes cartoon characters.

Of course, this small fact was never likely to go unnoticed, especially by Twitter users, who were very quick to point out the contrast between the simmering tensions in Catalonia, the obligations of the security forces and the giant paintings of Tweety Pie, Sylvester and Wile E. Coyote.
