At an emergency meeting of the plenary on Thursday Rojales Councillors have voted to increase the costs to all households for the collection of domestic rubbish from 2017. The increase was approved by the government’s ten PSOE votes while the opposition Partido Popular (4) and Partido Demócrata de Rojales (3), all voted against.

The measure, which will take effect in 2017, will see an average increase of 50% on the cost of refuse collections for each user – which will mean the charge to a half-dwelling will increase from 36 euros a year to 51, a move that is absolutely vital, according to the council, because of the considerable increase in the costs of the service which has now moved to the plant in Jijona.

“It is a question of balancing the revenues and expenses of the service whose rate has not changed since 2005,” according to the mayor of Rojales Antonio Perez, who said that “we do not like to raise rates or taxes but the increase is necessary so that we can continue to dispose of it in the proper way “.

However, the new regulation could also see a reduction of the annual rate by 25% for large families and pensioners.

The mayor said that this is a situation “that nobody likes,” and says that the increase “is reasonable and is below the majority of rates in many other municipalities in the region.”
