Elche 31 Torrevieja 7. By Will Needham
Torrevieja RFC, is a true representation of the town's international community. We are proud to have fielded players from many parts of the globe, including Hungary, Morocco, England, Ireland, Wales, Spain, Italy, Georgia, Argentina, Portugal and Belgium.
So when Jeff Davies, Torrevieja coach, gave the team his customary roasting before the start of the match, about commitment at training, and about what we should be focusing on for the next 80 minutes, it was then translated.
Torrevieja saw the debut of two new players, stepping onto the field for their first game of rugby. Federico Araya (Spain) at prop and Emanuel Fabricio Carreras (Argentina) on the wing, both players performed extremely well and can be proud of their efforts.
Torrevieja came into the match as underdogs and the score difference can be put down to Torrevieja’s poor tackling. On occasions Torrevieja simply let Elche players through. The fact that Torrevieja´s tackling was poor can be put down to the fact that the Torrevieja sports minister does not allow us to train on their grass. It seems that Concejal de Deporte (Sports officer), Daniel Plaza, has no interest in rugby. Despite numerous attempts to contact Sr Plaza, we have always been told he is unavailable. Graham Knight, the PP representative, made election promises on the radio pledging that his party would support expat sports. Maybe Graham Knight can remind Sr Plaza of this promise. We are only asking to use the existing facilities.
Enough of the rant...back to the rugby
Elche scored first by moving the ball well, and stretching the Torrevieja defence, scoring in the corner. The wind made conversions from such a distance near impossible, and predictably they missed.
Torrevieja saw the return of Jose Ramos Soares (Portugal), who came in at second row, winning lineout ball, and showed athleticism in the loose.
Garth Adams (Wales), showed his experience, breaking through the Elche defence on a number of occasions, selling dummies to the experienced Elche centres, and putting them on the floor.
Garth eventually scored a beautiful try near the posts, which was converted by Neil.
Man of the match for Torrevieja this week went to Yousef Tabbani (Morocco). Yousef came to Torrevieja rugby club never having picked up a rugby ball, but after two seasons at the club he has made the Number 14 shirt his own. Fast, His slight build makes him an elusive runner, who is extremely quick off the mark, and defensively he always gets his man.
After the match, as is the custom, we had shared a beer with Elche before making our way back to Captain José's bar, La Cova bar, in Torrevieja.
Congratulations to absent second row Vince Kirkham, who with some help from his partner Kate, is the proud father of twin baby girls.
Torrevieja would like to thank Elche for the fixture, and to our band of traveling fans.
We need new players, so if anyone would like to play for Torrevieja, please phone Jeff Davies on 677 607 424
