EU GREEN LIGHTS TORREVIEJA DESALINATION PLANT
Staff Reporter / 2007-06-18 12:40:07
On Thursday Georgios Peroukalis and Raul Zorita, two officials from the European union, officially visited the site for the possible installation of a desalination plant in Torrevieja, accompanied by Antoni Bernabe, the Official Government Delegate, the President of the CHS, Jose Salvador Fuentes Zorita and Adrian Baltanas the head of the Acuamed consortium that is part of the Environment Ministry.
Later that day a note revealed that an exhaustive study has shown that the chosen site for the plant is adequate and conforms with the local criteria regarding environmental and urbanising regulations.
The brief report also stated that the slush produced by the plant would not increase the salinity of the sea and that these emissions were in line with those permitted by the EU. It remains to be seen what the reaction of the Valencian Government will be to this report as initially Esteban Gonzalez Pons as Conseller for the Territory had stated that the installation of the plant - the biggest in Europe - would seriously affect two nearby areas that are protected - the lakes of Lagunas and La Mata.
