One of the largest concentrations of classic cars in the area took place on Sunday 8th November in the beautiful setting of San Pedro del Pinatar’s esplanade. Eighteen local clubs took part, with the international scene represented by Southern Costa Blanca’s original classic car club, Club Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Cars plus Phoenix Classic Car Club, all organised by Club de Automoviles Clasicos Mar Menor.
The weather was close to perfect for such an event, with temperatures around 24 degrees, hardly a cloud in the sky but a pleasant breeze to keep everyone cool. Over 250 cars plus around 60 bikes and scooters were on display from around 11.00 am until mid-afternoon. Unfortunately, due to there also being a triathlon taking place at the same time, and following a similar route as the cars had planned to take, the ‘run’ for the vehicles had to be cancelled due to a lack of a police escort, a ‘must have’ for the safety and insurance of such a large event.
Over 500 drivers and guests participated and were kept fed, watered and entertained through a giant paella, a beer stall and other diversions throughout the day. The occasion finished slightly earlier than originally planned due to there not being the drive through the area but not until an exchange of commemorative plaques took place between the attending clubs and the organisers.
An estimated three thousand plus visitors attended the event and organisers have promised to have a ‘Plan B’ up their sleeve for 2010 should a similar situation occur, so as not to disappoint the drivers nor visitors, by planning an even more spectacular event.
