The expat community in Pilar de la Horadada is at a loss this week as it continues to mourn the death of the one of it’s most influential and well respected residents, Robert (Bob) Ransome, who sadly passed away last Wednesday evening.
Bob retired to the area in 2001 when, almost immediately, he became integrated with the local Spanish community. As a Spanish speaker his language skills were in great demand and he quickly established himself as the interface between many members of the expat community and the local services. He always provided his assistance for free and took great delight in simply being able to help people out, such was the quality, one of a rare breed of men.
Within a year of his arrival Bob was also heavily involved in his local football club, UD Horadada. He was appointed to the Board of Directors (nicknamed The English Director) and became one of the founder members of the expat supporters club, the Horadada Reds, where, at the inaugural meeting in the old Stadium Bar in 2004 he was appointed as the club’s first President.
As an integral member of both the community and UD Horadada Bob worked tirelessly for the benefit of others. He was extremely well respected and as a gregarious man he had a remarkable gift for forging firm friendships.
Time spent with Bob, particularly when it involved a chat about his overriding passion of UD Horadada, was always a rewarding pleasure, with his wicked sense of humour he will be remembered with great affection by all who knew him.
Bob Ransome was born on July 4, 1934. He died aged 77 on Wednesday, August 17, 2011. He leaves behind a loving wife Sheila, a son Robert, twins Peter and Pauline and five grandchildren.
