Over 30000 spectators saw Real Murcia come from a goal down to gain a precious point against Real Madrid, who dominated the first half but failed to capitalise on their possession and paid the price in the second.
Madrid were on the offensive from the start and went ahead after just 9 minutes when an incisive bout of passing gave Guti the space to deliver a perfect cross for Robinho to nod in unopposed at the far post. Considering the amount of ball they had the visitors should have posed more of a threat to Murcia, but their moves broke down in the final third of the pitch and they went into the break just one goal to the good.
Murcia were in a much more positive frame of mind when they came out for the second half and an early spell of pressure brought it’s reward in the form of the equaliser in the 48th minute. De Lucas surged unchallenged into the area to meet a corner with an absolute bullet of a header which gave Casillas no chance. The goal inspired Murcia to outplay their illustrious opponents for much of the time and they fashioned some great chances only to be denied by Casillas and some poor finishing.
Madrid’s frustration with their own performance showed when Guti was sent off in the 82nd minute after responding to a foul by Arzo with a swipe of his boot which left the referee with no option but to dismiss him. They still lead the division but Barcelona closed the gap with a 3 – 0 win over Recreativo.
